City Island Oyster Reef, in partnership with NYC Department of Parks and Recreation and the Billion Oyster Project, is developing an outdoor education center in a city-owned wetlands area on the shoreline of Long Island Sound next to P.S. 175, the public school on City Island. Since 2020 the community has been actively engaged in removing debris and invasive plants. After considerable hard work and collaboration, this area can now be used on a regular basis by teachers and students with the permission of NYC Parks. With the support of grants from the Long Island Sound Stewardship Fund and the Richard Lounsbery Foundation, CIOR has developed comprehensive plans for a pilot oyster reef off the Living Shoreline, which will be constructed in the near future. The creation of a space for students and residents of NYC to learn about this important ecosystem on Long Island Sound is a crucial part of making sure that marine environments will remain protected.
