Shell Collection

We are looking for some able-bodied clam diggers (or mussel suckers) to help collect oyster and clam shells, which are crucial to our reef-building efforts, from local restaurants. Volunteers need to be available to help on Mondays or Thursdays between 4 and 6 p.m. or on Tuesdays or Fridays from 8 to 10 a.m. Although the work does not take long, it can be strenuous and a little dirty at times. Our shell collection work is done in concert with the Billion Oyster Project Shell Collection Network.

Oyster Research Station Hands-On Experience

Get hands on with our Oyster Research Stations. You’ll learn how to properly measure an oyster, how to identify biodiversity found in the cage, and how oyster reefs contribute to the health of the coastal ecosystem. Great for all ages! Gloves are recommended. The Oyster Research Stations are monitored in partnership with the Billion Oyster Project.

Water-Quality Monitoring

Enjoy a sunrise paddle around City Island while you learn about water-quality monitoring and how water-quality parameters, such as dissolved oxygen, pH, and turbidity, affect oysters. Kayakers and paddle boarders are welcome; must bring your own kayak or paddle board. Everyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, and all who participate must sign a waiver before we launch. Meet at 89 Horton for a 6 a.m. launch.

Beach Surveys

Explore the beaches of City Island while searching for native oyster populations. Oysters that we find are measured and photographed, and the data we collect will eventually be used to apply for permits to develop future oyster reefs. Locations and times are dependent on tides and will be posted on the CIOR monthly calendar.
