Ahmed Abbas
NYC DEP WATER ECOLOGY SCIENTIST
Ahmed Abbas is an environmental scientist and educator with a multidisciplinary background in biological and earth sciences. Currently serving as a scientist in water ecology at the NYC Department of Environmental Protection’s Bureau of Wastewater Treatment, Ahmed brings extensive experience in field research, ecological monitoring, and data analysis to support water quality and sustainability initiatives across New York City. He holds an MS in Earth and Environmental Sciences from CUNY Brooklyn College and a BA in Biological Sciences with a minor in Psychology from CUNY Baruch College. Throughout his academic and professional journey, Ahmed has contributed to impactful ecological projects ranging from oyster reef restoration and salt marsh rehabilitation to invasive species management and nitrogen bioextraction. In addition to his scientific work, he has served as an adjunct lecturer at Baruch College, where he leads courses in ecological research, mentors students, and coordinates field trips to promote hands-on environmental education. A passionate advocate for urban ecology and environmental stewardship, Ahmed continues to engage communities through outreach, education, and research that supports the restoration and resilience of New York’s coastal ecosystems.
