Restoration Plan – Timeline

  • June through October 2019: 20 experimental mesh plastic bags filled with oyster shells hanging off of private docks around City Island. Monitoring has been performed and data are currently analyzed.
  • July 2019: Representatives from Coastal Steward consulted on site selection.
  • Summer and fall 2019: Site selection dives around City Island.
  • November 2019: Interviews with local fishermen and divers for anecdotal information to determine where live oysters were observed in the waters around City Island.
  • February through May, 2020: CIOR beach surveys to document live oysters and oyster shell abundance and size distribution on City Island shoreline at low tide. Surveys and analysis are on-going.
  • March 2020: Draft proposal of deployment plan to be sent to reviewers.
  • June 2020: Awaiting shell collection permit (BUD) to be obtained through memorandum of understanding with the Billion Oyster Project.
  • June 2020: Data analysis and report.
  • Summer of 2020: Gabion cages with cured shell material and possibly oyster spat on shell placed at the proposed sites.
  • Summer of 2020: Monitoring of small-scale pilot deployment.
