Barbara Warkentine

SCIENTIST IN RESIDENCE AT LEHMAN COLLEGE

Dr. Warkentine earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Biology from Lehman College of CUNY in 1979 and 1983 respectively and earned her Doctoral Degree in Biology in 1990 from the City University of New York. She joined the faculty of SUNY Maritime College’s Science Department in 1990. In addition to teaching a variety of biology courses, she was instrumental in developing the department’s Marine Environmental Science program. After her 32 year tenure at Maritime College, Dr. Warkentine retired at the rank of Distinguished Service Professor in 2022. Although retired, she continues to be involved in research. She has published over 35 peer- reviewed papers focusing on aquatic ecology with special reference to fish population dynamics and benthic macro-invertebrates from both marine and freshwater environments. Currently she holds a position as Scientist in Residence at Lehman College of CUNY and works part-time at the college as a Senior Adjunct College Laboratory Technician. In 2025 she began working with the City Island Oyster Reef Project assisting with the fish monitoring and data analysis aspects of this project.
